When you very first get your ferret home, what should the experience be in training a ferret?
A new pet should never be allowed complete free run of the house, especially if they are a new ferret, they need to be monitored constantly and never let out of sight! You will also need to train a ferret with a few basic techniques to make sure you both have the best life possible.
Any techniques you use in training a ferret to use a litter box?

Training a ferret is like anything, practice makes perfect, the more repitition and routine you introduce into a ferrets life the easier training a ferret becomes. A lot of people get scared of so many things when confronted with a small pet that relies on us humans for everything, but with constant supervision and love you will have a pet that everyone will want to hold and look after with you.
Some people will punish and reward ferrets, is this the technique you use?
I never use physical punishment as it makes your ferret fear you which causes them become very anxious and nervous around you, you want them to be so happy to see their mommy or daddy that they will do anything to make you happy, at times ferrets will need to be signposted to the right and wrong behaviour, with a firm NO! or a treat, these are my favorite techniques when training a ferret.

Training a ferret is an excellent thing to partake in together with your ferret, so remember you can train your ferret as much as you like, but you must also train your self. I should train myself, but what about family members?
It is so important to help your family members become aware of training a ferret, they must be vigilant them selves and help in the growth and development of the family pet ferret, this way everyone will come to love the ferret and it will think its home is the best home possible, which is always correct, even ferrets think there is no place like home!
So safety is the main priority?
Of course, safety is your number one priority, training a ferret to do things which create a safe environment, like teaching them that when you call their name, this is an excellent thing and they must come running to mommy or daddy at once because they are about to be rewarded or get lots of attention. This technique will let you relax slightly when watching your ferrets, but you must always be on the look out.
