Ferret Odor

Ferret Odor

Hey Rob Again…

Today I am going to tackle the difficult task of ferret odor, the thing to remember with ferret odor is that it is their natural smell, it is not particularly strong or potent if it is dealt with, it is just different, this is what a lot of people will pounce on when people say they are thinking about getting a ferret “Dont they smell though?”, yes they do, but so do humans if they do not wash and sweat a lot, I am sure we would all smell a lot worse if we were covered in our hair as well.

Washing a ferret can make them smell worse, but if you wash them to keep them clean and not to keep them smelling nice then it will help with the smell, try not to over wash your ferret it can be bad for them to be washed too much.

Ferrets are from the skunk family so they have a distinct smell, which I personally love (At this point some people may be thinking I love ferrets too much, but who can love a ferret too much?!?).

If you are tackling the situation of ferret odor, then here are my top tips below.

- Wash them to keep them clean.
– Wash their bedding inside their cage.
– Clean their cage regularly and as much as possible.
– Train your ferret to go to toilet in their litter pan.
– Keep your ferret active and healthy.

If unlike me you do not like the ferret odor then using these techniques you can help to reduce the ferret odor, they will always smell they are animals after all but you can help to reduce this by following the steps listed, also by having some air fresheners about will of course help the odor, we found by having our ferrets indoors our house actually smells nicer because we are more aware of the smell than we were before.

One of the difficult things with ferret odor is not actually the daily living with the smell but when you have guests round, this can be a fairly anxious time as you want to make a good impression and make them feel at home, the important thing to remember is that it is your house and it is up to you what you do with it, if you do want to reduce the smell of the ferrets then go for it and have some of the great constant air fresheners available, if you do want to keep your ferrets healthy, happy and clean but are not too concerned about their smell then you do not need to do anything about their individual musk specifically.
